Attention Terrorists: The Theft of Nuclear and YOU

An earlier post was devoted to “The Arafat Mystery” (http://thenuclearcatastrophe.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-arafat-mystery.html ). The burning question was.....did Yassar Arafat die from poisoning by radioactive polonium-210? The polonium was found on his toothbrush. So his body was exhumed this year after his death in 2004. According to an article in the LA Times 11/7/2013 Swiss forensic examiners found sufficient traces of polonium in Arafat's remains to conclude with relative certainty that his cause of death was polonium poisoning. The question remains as to who placed the polonium to which he was exposed.

Arafat died at 75, less than a month after falling ill with what doctors thought was influenza. He had vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain, which are also symptoms of radiation poisoning. However, these symptoms are rarely diagnosed as such, unless the person has been known to be exposed. Radiation poisoning was used in 2006 to kill a KGB defector Alexander Litvinenko in London. Supposedly it was put into his tea. Again, the perpetrator is unknown, and the guilty party would be thought to suffer some exposure himself!

And now we have had nuclear material stolen from a medical device (such as an x-ray machine) being shipped by truck to a disposal site in Mexico. The truck was stolen from a gas station. The device was found later in a field but the nuclear material had been removed. Please read the following article as to the danger of handling this material. A person could die in as little as one hour.

While terrorists may think this nuclear material is something to add to their home made bomb.....hopefully they will be dead before it is completed.

Mexico Says Stolen Radioactive Source Found in Field

Mexico has informed the IAEA's Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) that it has located a dangerous radioactive source that had been missing since the truck on which it was being transported was stolen on 2 December 2013.

Mexico's "Comisión Nacional de Seguridad Nuclear y Salvaguardias (CNSNS)" said law enforcement authorities tracked the teletherapy device down to a field near the town of Hueypoxtla in Mexico State, very close to where the truck was stolen, at around 14:00 (20:00 UTC) on 4 December 2013.

The radioactive cobalt-60 source contained in the device has been removed (by the thieves) from its protective shielding, but there is no indication that it has been damaged or broken up and no sign of contamination to the area. Police have secured the area around the source to a distance of 500 metres.

The source, with an activity of 3,000 curies (111 terabequerels), is considered Category 1. The IAEA defines a Category 1 source as extremely dangerous to the person. If not safely managed or securely protected, it would be likely to cause permanent injury to a person who handled it or who was otherwise in contact with it for more than a few minutes. It would probably be fatal to be close to this amount of unshielded radioactive material for a period in the range of a few minutes to an hour.

Mexican authorities are assessing potential radiation exposure to persons who may have been close to the unshielded source, and hospitals have been alerted to watch for symptoms of such exposure.

People exposed to the source do not represent a contamination risk to others. Based on the information available, the Mexican authorities and the IAEA believe the general public is safe and will remain safe.

The CNSNS and the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Nucleares (ININ) are preparing plans to recover and secure the source.

The IAEA remains in close contact with the Mexican authorities. It believes the actions taken in response to the discovery of the source are appropriate and follow Agency guidance for this type of event.

From Rueters:
As a follow up, the truck was found on Wednesday close to where it was stolen outside Mexico City. The thieves removed the radioactive material from a protective case, exposing them to dangerous levels of radiation then dumped it less than a mile away.

The truck was stolen on Monday while it was taking cobalt-60 from a hospital in the northern city of Tijuana to a radioactive waste-storage center, Mexican officials and the UN agency said earlier.
"Both the container and the radioactive source have been located," said Mardonio Jimenez Rojas, an official at the commission, told Reuters. "The radioactive source was removed from its container and was found a kilometer away."
"The thieves were exposed to radiation," he added, saying those exposed to the material could die. Experts were working on how to secure the radioactive material in a protective container, he said.
The vehicle was seized when the driver stopped at a gas station in the town of Temascalapa, 35 km (22 miles) northeast of Mexico City. Truck hijacking is common in Mexico and the theft occurred in the State of Mexico, which is not a drug cartel stronghold.
"Our suspicion is that they had no idea what they had stolen. This is a area where robberies are common," Fernando Hidalgo, spokesman for the Hidalgo state prosecutor, said earlier.
In 2000, three people died in Thailand after a cobalt-60 teletherapy unit was sold as scrap metal and ended up on a junkyard. About 1,870 people living nearby were exposed to "some elevated level of radiation," according to an IAEA publication.
About the same time in Mexico, homes built with metal rods that had been contaminated by stolen cobalt were destroyed, a spokesman for the attorney general's office said.
"Cobalt-60 has figured in several serious accidents, some of them fatal," said nuclear expert Mark Hibbs of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace think-tank. "If dispersed, cobalt-60 or other radioactive source material could cause radiation poisoning locally."

The Internet Catastrophe....and It's Not Over Yet!

In the early years of dial up modems, the internet used to disappear or be down periodically.  Everyone would rant and scream, even though it was in its infancy and we had no idea what far out boundaries the internet would actually reach.  Besides emailing and texting, now we pay our bills over the internet, we look up every question we can imagine by googling it, we have facebook for our friends and businesses, twitter to get the latest news in 140 characters (plus maybe a picture attached) and hordes of applications for shopping, playing games, downloading EBooks and on and on.

So several weeks ago the internet connection at my house began to fade in and out periodically. I work out of my home and I had put off posting on twitter until after dinner.  When I switched on the computer it said “No Service”.  Piqued, I went to the cell phone:  “No  Service”.  Upstairs there was a computer with a DSL land line: “No service”.  I decided to wait until later.  Later was the next morning.  It was on when I awoke at 6 am.  But it went out about 8 am.  I tried rebooting the modem.  But I also have a signal booster and it was making angry red flashes.  When I tried rebooting that it went red for everything except power.

Now I am left with one alternative – call the service provider.  Verizon is a company that has grown tremendously large over the years.  They are now so large that hardly anyone can help you.  Time after time I have spent hours on the telephone with them to really get nowhere.  Call this number they say.  And when you do you spend at least 30 minutes on hold and the company says they are not the correct department after all.  But they give you another number to call.  The same experience repeats over and over until you give up.  So I was not looking forward to having to call Verizon.

Numerous phone calls resulted in about four hours of my time (one half of a work day) wasted.  The first time I got a live person on the phone I asked if there was an outage.  He said no.  He again had me test all the equipment and couldn’t find a problem.  I didn’t feel it was my equipment because it had all failed at one time – usually all four tires on your car don’t go at once.  But he referred me to another number.  This time the number was a pre-programmed message about things you can try.  At the end of the message it asked me if I would like to take a survey.  Yes, I did and gave my opinion that so far they were a zero.

The next day I decided to try one more time and managed to get a live person.  She was very nice and insisted we do an advanced check of the modem.  That meant I had to go into the equipment room and disconnect the cellular and the Ethernet routers, hook a portable wireless computer to the modem, and sit for an hour going through steps read to me over a portable phone.  It was about 80 degrees in the equipment room.  I was sweating by the time we were through.  She informed me that we had “an outage”.  I said that I had asked that question before all this time (my free time) spent on the problem and had been told there was not “an outage”.  She apologized and asked if I wanted to take a survey.  I said no.

There was then a recorded message the next day that  “there was an outage”.   I had had it.  I do most of my communication through the internet. I spend at least fifty percent of every day  using my computer.  I would drive down the street until I could pick up cell service and check my messages and answer  those that were most important on my hand held smart phone.  I called a lot of people that I usually messaged.  Now my business office had moved to my car using the minicomputer smart phone.  I went to the library to work, to Starbucks and McDonald’s, and down the street to hook onto a neighbor’s network – she let me sit in the backyard with a portable computer.

So finally I was tired of living out of my car and other’s back yards.  I researched other internet providers and noticed that Direct TV advertised 99 percent signal dependability.  We had had Direct TV for years and in the beginning it was out a lot.  But for the past several years it had turned itself around and was hardly ever out.  So I called them and they said they would send someone out to set up a new internet service that was wireless.   Meanwhile I had never heard from Verizon again and still had “No Service”.

Direct TV technicians arrived promptly on time, with a 30 foot ladder to get up on the second story  roof. They worked with my husband (who is an electrical contractor) to understand our in house electrical wiring system and protect the roof tile from breakage.  Up the ladder they went to the second story, mounted a new dish to pick up the internet signal, pushed the wire down the metal tube meant for such into the electrical room, and hooked it onto their new modem.  Presto!  We had internet after being down for a whole week!

About one hour after we had our new wireless internet service, Verizon came back on line with cellular service (I don’t know about internet because we were disconnected from them at that point).  I logged on to “My Verizon” page and chose “Make changes to your service”.  Immediately a message came on the screen  “We have noticed that you have had outages.  We recommend you change to FIOS (a new division of Verizon that is hooked to you by high speed cable.) When I typed in my telephone number associated with the account, they gave me a number to call, saying they could not service my request over the computer. That person (when I reached them) did take my order to take my internet service off my bill but tried to continually sell me FIOS.  Sorry, I was already connected to Direct TV now.

While I had hoped this would be the end of the story, it turns out that satellite wireless (at least by Direct TV Hughes) will not allow your security cameras to be accessed by the internet.  (They are working on the problem).  Four hours of calls to them got me a sorry, but cannot help you.  So it's off to another internet company next week.

I cannot understand why communication is so poor with these companies.  Direct TV spent a lot of money installing the equipment that I am now going to cancel.   And with Verizon, I hate to be paranoid but I was the only one on my street to be without internet for a week.  However, we are the last house on the street.  But they had been trying to sell us FIOS for over a year.  It isn’t possible that they interrupted our service just to get our attention, is it?  And the government doesn’t spy on us either, does it?  And I still don't have the reliable internet service I want..

WHAT'S UP WITH NUCLEAR? Have we made any mistakes?

WHAT'S UP WITH NUCLEAR?
Have we made any mistakes?

June 16, 1945:Our world’s most Ominous anniversary: On This Day 68 Years Ago the Nuclear Age began when the U.S. Detonated The First Atomic Bomb in what is now called Trinity, New Mexico. Subsequently on August 6, 1945, the US bombed Hiroshima, Japan, with an atomic bomb in an effort to end World War II. Three days after the Hiroshima bombing, another atomic bomb, called the “Fat Man” killed 73,000 and injured 74,000 people in Nagasaki leading to the surrender of Japan & the end of the war.

Pacific islands surrounded a deep sapphire lagoon, Enewetak coral atoll was a beautiful place to launch the world's first hydrogen bomb. Between 1948 & 1958, 43 weapons exploded over it. Among these was Ivy Mike, a world-first hydrogen bomb, 500 times bigger than Hiroshima’s Little Boy, that destroyed the entire island of Elugelab. By the time testing ceased, the entire atoll was highly radioactive, its reefs and islands dotted with craters that each measured several hundred feet in diameter.

1949:
SEMIPALATINSK, KAZAKHSTAN: The Soviets detonated their first nuclear device here. Anastacia Kyseleva saw her first atomic mushroom cloud from the fields near her village. Soldiers came and ordered everyone outside – a move experts now suspect was made to protect residents from potential house collapses. "It looked like a sunset," says Ms. Kyseleva. Some stood frozen, staring; others ran toward the bomb. "Those people who followed it, they either died or they couldn't walk afterwards."

Feb. 1, 1951 Helen Bush Jenkins set up her camera on a Los Angeles rooftop in the darkness. The picture captured an atomic test blast in Nevada. The sky went from pitch black to daylight then back to black again.

1954:
The Castle Bravo test created the worst radiological disaster in the United States' testing history. Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands, 1 March 1954. yielded 15 megatons and was the largest nuclear weapon ever detonated by the United States. By accident, the inhabited atolls of Rongelap, Rongerik and Utirik were contaminated with radioactive fallout, as was the Japanese fishing trawler Lucky Dragon. The controversy over radioactive fallout from testing activities caused great international concern.

Operation Mosaic G2-19 June 1956 -Monte Bello Islands, Australia. Yield: 98 kt This was the highest yield test ever conducted in Australia. Since the test yield broke an assurance made personally by PM Anthony Eden of the UK to PM Robert Menzies of Australia that the yield would not exceed 2.5 time that of Hurricane (thus about 62 kt), the true yield was concealed until 1984.
The H bomb was not clean. It delivered large amounts of fallout capable of immediate harm hundreds of miles from blast point. That the United Kingdom should continue with the pre 1954 mythology (the myth that H bombs are clean) in the modern courts is incomprehensible. The British weapons used in Australia astonished the US monitoring crews with their dirtiness.

1957:
Originally named Windscale, Cumberland (now Sellafield, Cumbria) this is the site of the worst nuclear accident in Great Britain's history. It was ranked in severity at level 5 on the 7-point International Nuclear Event Scale. The nuclear core reaction erupted into a severe fire, totally damaged the reactor, & released radiation into the surroundings. After more than 50 years the radiation levels have subsided & the government will attempt to dismantle this nuclear plant.

In 1957, the British military began conducting nuclear tests in the Pacific Ocean and based themselves on Christmas Island. The tests ended six years later and parts of the island were sealed off for decades. in this 1962 test you see the spectators watching. (???)

1957:Mayak Nuclear Plant is one of the biggest nuclear facilities in the Russian Federation. The facility has experienced 20 or more accidents affecting at least half a million people in the past 45 years. On 29th September, 1957, the failure of the cooling system for a tank storing thousands of tons of nuclear waste resulted in a chemical explosion having a force estimated at about 75 tons of TNT. This released radioactivity over 15,000 sq. miles. A large area was left barren and unusable.

1961, a nuclear plant 40 mi from Idaho Falls underwent the first reactor core meltdown in American history, & the only failure that ever directly killed anyone. Jack Bynes & Richard Legg were killed on-site (Legg was pinned to a ceiling by flying metal), & Richard McKinley died shortly after. The event was instrumental in tightening procedures for nuclear energy production. The reactor’s central control rod had been raised close to twice what would be expected to cause a meltdown – by whom?

1966. A B-52 bomber carrying 4 nuclear weapons dropped them in Spain on the southern Mediterranean Coast after a midair collision from a routine refueling. Seven American crewmen were killed. 2 of the bombs hit the ground and ruptured, leaving a large area dangerously contaminated. One stayed intact, & the final one landed in the Mediterranean. The international incident led to the banning of all American nuclear cargo over Spanish airspace. The cleanup really never got done.

Yucca Flat, December 18. 1970 After the Baneberry test, involving the detonation of a 10 kiloton nuclear device underneath Yucca Flat in Nevada, the plug sealing the shaft from the surface failed and radioactive debris vented into the atmosphere. Eighty six workers at the site were exposed to radiation.

Three Mile Island near Harrisburg, Pa. On March 28, 1979,the worst nuclear disaster in U.S. history shook the nation to its core. The island is home to 2 nuclear reactors. One of them continues to function & deliver power. The second one has not been run again since that day when a few malfunctions & a series of human errors resulted in a partial nuclear meltdown. About 20 tons of radioactive uranium spilled out of the reactor core and almost burned through the five-inch thick steel floor.

K-431 Chazhma Bay, August 10. 1985 During refuelling in Vladivostok, Russia, the Echo II class submarine (like the one seen above) suffered an explosion, sending a radioactive cloud of gas into the air. Ten sailors were killed in the incident and 49 people were observed to have radiation injuries.

The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (Ukrainian SSR), which was under the jurisdiction of Moscow. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over Western USSR and Europe. It is considered the worst nuclear power accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale.

1987:
Goiania Accident, September 13, 87 More than 240 people were exposed to radiation when a junkyard dealer in Goiania, Brazil, broke open an abandoned radiation therapy machine & removed a small highly radioactive cake of cesium chloride. Children, attracted to the bright blue of the radioactive material, touched it & rubbed it on their skin, resulting in the contamination of several city blocks which had to be demolished. www.time.com/...

The Davis-Besse nuclear generating station in Ohio, where a football-size hole overlooked by NRC inspectors nearly caused a catastrophe in 2002

March 11, 2011:
Picture of Fukushima nuclear catastrophe as the meltdown of the reactors begins. (Fairewinds)

2013: Cleanup operations at the Western hemisphere's most contaminated nuclear site in Hanford, Washington. To build an atomic bomb during World War II, the US created the first-ever plutonium reactor. 68 years later,Hanford remains off limits because it has 53 million gallons of radioactive waste stored in aging tanks. With billions of dollars a year invested in cleanup, some 12,000 people work at Hanford, which at 586 square miles is twice the size of Singapore. Estimated 20 years to clean up.

?????????What IS a PREPPER??????????

I always thought I was a prepper. After all, I wrote “The Nuclear Catastrophe”, a fiction novel of survival. And the nuclear disaster at Fukushima showed it CAN happen. Actually it seems eerie that I wrote the original novel predicting this disaster 30 years previous to it happening. But after updating it as an EBook I started writing this blog and tweeting. My twitter account  immediately got 20 followers which increased to 30 over the next several weeks. My popularity was overwhelming.

The first things to write about was a list of needed items to prepare in case of disaster. So I blogged and tweeted about that. When I later tweeted that my twitter account was targeting people who wanted to become ready to survive in a disaster, twenty of my thirty followers left in one day. That’s when I knew the government WAS actually watching. I thought about getting them back with a bomb tweet, then decided against it. Now I have almost 3000 followers in 2 twitter accounts so I guess it’s good I didn’t do that.

But recently Bryan Foster, AKA Zion Prepper contacted me and asked if I would review some of his books in “The Prepper’s Survival Guide Series.” I was especially interested in “A Guide to Sheltering In Place,” written after the Boston Marathon Bombings. Violence now seems to intrude more and more into our lives as people want to be noticed for their beliefs (not just have the right to believe as they wish – they want to impose their beliefs on us – like it or not). So I read that one first. Liked it! And must say that there were MANY things I did not know…..or had not thought of.

*how long does water last?
*how much water do you need per person per day?
*what to do if you are out of bottled water?
*how long can you go without water? Without food?
And: *what should you do if a bomb explodes near you? Or gunfire?

Don't you think that these are reasonable questions and that we should all know the answers? Right now thousands of acres are being burned by an out of control wildfire that is 150 miles from San Francisco. This fire is burning over the power lines and water facilities that supply San Francisco. The city was put on alert that severe damage might happen and the city could be without water or electricity for a period of time. Are YOU prepped? If it is not a fire it could be an earthquake or a hurricane or a tornado or a cruise ship disabled out in the ocean. All these disasters are beyond our ability to control. But we CAN control whether or not we are prepped.

"The Prepper's Survival Guide" by Bryan Foster is an introduction to Prepping. It contains definitions (do you know what a bug out bag - BOB- is?). It compares self-reliance to prepping. He lists the Ten Commandments of Prepping. There is lots of good advice about items you most likely have not considered. And he actually describes exercises the family can perform together. I liked the one where the family shuts off the electricity, gas, and water and spends the weekend together. After that adventure there are probably a lot of things you would change from self-reliance to more prepping.

We read books about science fiction. We read books about how to make and keep our money. We read books about the past. We read books about health. Why not read a book (or two) about how to get prepared to save your life in the event of an unforeseen emergency?

I highly recommend getting these two books by Bryan Foster. They are published in paperback and one is available as an EBook. I would recommend purchasing them as paperback so you can keep them on hand as a reference book. Your kindle or nook won't be working if electricity is not available for charging, and the internet connection may also be down.

"A Guide to Sheltering in Place"

We read books about science fiction. We read books about how to make and keep our money. We read books about the past. We read books about health. Why not read a book (or two) about how to get prepared to save your life in the event of an unforseen emergency?

From: Wikipedia.com:                   Definition of Prepper:

Survivalism is a movement of individuals or groups (called survivalists or preppers) who are actively preparing for emergencies, including possible disruptions in social or political order, on scales from local to international. Survivalists often acquire emergency medical and self-defense training, stockpile food and water, prepare to become self-sufficient, and build structures (e.g., a survival retreat or an underground shelter) that may help them survive a catastrophe.

Anticipated disruptions may include:
* Clusters of natural disasters, patterns of apocalyptic planetary crises, or "Earth Changes" (tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, solar storms, severe thunderstorms, floods, tsunamis).

*Anthropogenic disasters (chemical spills, release of radioactive materials, nuclear or conventional war, oppressive governments).

*The general collapse of society caused by the shortage or unavailability of resources such as electricity, fuel, food, or water.

*Financial disruption or economic collapse (caused by monetary manipulation, hyperinflation, deflation, or depression).

* A global pandemic.

* Widespread chaos or some other unexplained apocalyptic event.

I became anti-nuclear when I heard a simulation of a station black out accident scenario from a US scientist in 1999.  To highlight the issue of nuclear power and earthquakes, I went to IAEA in 2002 to directly plea for halting nuclear power in Japan.  I remember a superior of my acquaintance in IAEA telling me, Ms. Takenouchi, this issue is too big for anyone to tackle.  5 million Japanese peoples deaths may not be able to be avoided.  The only way to avert such a situation is that every Japanese raise his/her voice to stop nuclear power. Since then, I have been trying to disseminate information about this issue, but in the end the accident still took place.  I feel so regretful and sad.

I would like to tell you three things today.

1.

People, especially children in Fukushima and other contaminated areas should be evacuated immediately.
I visited Fukushima 2 days ago and I was speechless when I attended a symposium held by government-sided scholars.  They keep saying that Fukushima is almost safe.  Meanwhile, they are getting the data of childrens radiation dose and are conducting health check-ups.  Why cant they let these children evacuate first and conduct medical check-ups afterwards?  Are they trying to use Fukushima children as their guinea pigs? Regretfully, this is probable considering what the US and Japanese scholars did to Hiroshima and Nagasaki hibakusyas.  Please do not use Fukushima children for studies.  As a mother of a one year old, I would like to make a strong appeal about this to the world.

2.

2.
The limit of 500 Bq/kg is way too high.  Has anybody in this room read the study conducted by Yuri Bandazhevsky, the founder and the former director of the Gomel Medical Institute?  According to his study, when the cesium is incorporated into the body at 20Bq/kg level, functional abnormality in the heart is likely to take place.  Also, according to a graph in ICRP publication 111 (2009), intake of 10 Bq/day cesium, only one 100th of the Japanese reference level  would likely lead to heart abnormality within 2 years! (Considering that an average adults eats nearly 2kg of foods daily, if they eat upper limit of 500Bq/kg food, daily intake is 500Bq/kg ×2kg=1000Bq/day.  10Bq/day =1/100 of 1000Bq/day) From this graph, we can tell that the statement saying childrens cesium food intake should be zero Bq by Dr. Uladimir Babenka, Deputy-Director of BELRAD Institute is not an exaggeration at all.  At the same time, contaminated debris should not be distributed all over Japan.  Especially if it is burned, cesium, with a very low boiling point of 641 degrees Celsius, will become fine particles in the air which can be easily inhaled by people, causing serious internal exposure.

3

Nuclear power plants are not supposed to be operating.  It is totally insane for  the Japanese government to continue the operation of nuclear power plants in Japan even after the Fukushima accident. It is even still trying to export nuclear plants to overseas.  There have been earthquakes quite frequently now all over Japan and there could be the 2nd Fukushima accident anywhere in Japan in the near future.  On top of that, Fukushima No 4 exploded even though it was not operating.  Hence, structures of and around spent fuel pools should be enhanced against coming earthquakes all over Japan. By doing these three things, please save childrens lives, lives of the future generations and lives of your own.  Thank you very much.

Dr. Shuntaro Hida, Hiroshima A-bomb survivor, Physician

In August 1945, I was working as a doctor at Hiroshima Military Hospital. On the morning of the 6th, I happened to be 6km away from the hospital as there had been an emergency house-call on a child patient late at night and luckily, I was not killed by the direct hit of the A-bomb.

Ever since, I have been looking after thousands of hibakusyas for 65 years. I saw some of the horrendous deaths of those directly hit by the A-bomb. Besides terrible burns and wounds, they developed highfever, purple spots, and finally died from massive bleeding from their bodies including mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals etc.

But what was even more shocking to me was that people who came to Hiroshima afterwards also developed similar symptoms and died.

I have continued to see patients who have suffered unknown diseases throughout their lives due to the internal radiation exposure caused by the intake or inhalation of radioactive materials into their body. I believe they are the most prominent victims of this nuclear age.

However, under occupation after the war, General MacArthur made hibakusyas a military secret and issued the official order not to talk and write about them. They also prohibited physicians and scholars to study hibakusyas and proclaimed that those who violated the order should be severely punished. Thus all hibakusyas were totally ignored for 7 following the war.

Moreover, the Atomic Bomb Casualties Commission (later known as the Radiation Effects Association) strongly disseminated the phrase,Internal exposure is harmless to the human body because the radiation

level is so low. So, hibakyusa suffering from so called A-bomb burabura disease (extreme and persistent chronicle sluggishness) were told neurosis or fake, which added more suffering to lives of the hibakusya.

I have also seen burabura disease patients among nuclear power plant workers. Electric companies have often announced that there was no damage to human health right after a nuclear accident. But how can a

person from an electricity company, who is not even a doctor, assume that there is no health damage immediately after the accident? To my eyes, these announcements are like lines from a self-produced stage

production.

After the Fukushima accident, three nuclear power plant workers have died and Tokyo Electric Company have denied any causality from radiation. How can they prove that there is no relationship with radiation?

In fact, hundreds of people consulted me after Fukushima accident, whose children are suffering nose bleeding, diarrhea, fever, swollen thyroid, purple spots not only from Fukushima and North Eastern Japan,

but also from Tokyo metropolitan area and as far as Yamanashi and Shizuoka.

What can mothers do when their children develop these symptoms? I am seriously worried myself as I don't know exactly what they can do. Nobody or no family can now be totally safe from radiation in Japan.

The only way for us all to survive is to abolish both nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants in the world. Thank you very much.

Matashichi Oishi, former crew of the Lucky 5th Dragon, Hibakusya from Bikini nuclear test

I believe we cannot have a correct understanding of Fukushima nuclear accident unless we look back the Bikini Incident 57 years ago.  The most important point is, who and why a dangerous nuclear power plant was introduced to Japan, a most earthquake prone country.

When I was a crew member of Lucky 5th Dragon fishermen’s boat in 1954, I encountered a US Pacific thermonuclear test, approximately 1000 times as powerful as the Hiroshima A-bomb.  I became a Hibakusya.  By the fallout brought back to Japan, people came to realize that the Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere was strongly contaminated with radiation, which became a big news, later called as Bikini Incident.

Various facts came to be revealed through archive materials.  From 1946 to 1958, the US military alone conducted 67 atmospheric nuclear testing at Bikini and Eniwetok Atolls, which was 100 megaton nuclear explosion in total.  Also, this 100 megaton explosion is equivalent to Hiroshima A-bomb dropped each single day for the duration of 18 years.  Isn’t this amazing?

Thermonuclear bomb did not only give out enormous explosive power, but also scattered  deadly radioactive materials in the environment. The half lives of radioactive materials can range as long as dozens of years to even tens of thousands of years. These materials can be absorbed into various parts of human bodies, harming the chromosomes and body tissues internally-this is called internal exposure.  This kind of damage can cause still birth, congenital defects, which could be transferred from generation to generation.

Even the modern science and medicine cannot detect where such long-lived radioactive material can travel in the winds and food chain, or who and which part of the body such materials can finally come down to.  This is the horror of radiation.  Maybe some of you might have become hibakusya already.

I want to say this.  In spite of citizens’ voices of concern against nukes and radiation in those days, the governments of the US and Japan smothered the incident and hid the facts.  What happened then?  Nuclear weapons become much more powerful than Hiroshima A-bomb and more than 20000 nuclear warheads are now threatening the entire humanity.

The US government did not take any responsibility or compensate for the victims of this very important Bikini incident and instead, paid small amount of consolation money only.  Meanwhile, the Japanese government acknowledged the continuation of the nuclear testing and in return, demanded for nuclear power behind the scenes.  Don’t you think these people who made efforts to introduce nuclear power to Japan highly responsible?  I believe they are the responsible.

Bikini Incident is not a past.  Contrary to it, that incident was the very start of the entire story. However, nobody talks about Bikini Incident any more.

In those days, the US tried to build a military block by providing uranium to western world and approached Japan through CIA targeting at a major media company Yomiuri Shimbun.  The then Yomiuri president, Mr. Matsutaro Shoriki conducted an all-out promotion of peaceful use of nuclear power using his own media company to shift the raging anti-nuke sentiment.

In the political arena, so-called young-military-officer politician Yasuhiro Nakasone, who became a Prime Minister of Japan later days, took a lead to pass the nuclear power budget of 235 million yen at the Diet, only three days after the Bilini Incident, in line with the US government intention.  If we realize the background of this history, we could see where the responsibility of the current nuclear catastrophe lies and how the compensation should be made in the future. Thank you very much.

Ryuusuke Umeda, former nuclear power plant worker

I worked for Shimane and Turuga nuclear power plants.  I worked very close to the reactor core and got exposed to radiation.

In my case, there was no safety education, and workers were not even aware of the concept of “exposure to radiation” .

Though we received dosimeters, since the alarm went off so frequently and distracted our works, we left them to the workers in the lower radiation level areas, and our supervisor deliberately overlooked this.  In Shimane, workers just wore regular work clothes and did not wear masks.

The scariest thing about radiation is that its impact on human health takes a long time to appear, so at first it seems safe. In my case, I suffered from nose bleeding and general malaise (so called Burabura disease).  Burabura Disease makes it very hard for people to work, but as it is difficult to diagnose, many people do not understand and regard such Burabura patients merely as lazy people.

In 2000, I also got myocardial infarction and was unable to work.  There are very few who apply for workers’ compensation and they are forced to bear the condition.

In the past, I was neither “for” or “against” nuclear power.  I was hesitant to speak out seeing I received payment through working at nuclear plants.

However, in order to prevent radiation exposure to more people, I became anti-nuclear.  Then the Fukushima accident took place and many workers, especially sub contractors have been exposed.  I heard there was one worker who died of myocardial infarction.  I believe all the nuclear power plants should be shut down.

Now, I want to raise three proposals.

1  A health consultation service should be established. There have been more than 400,000 nuclear power plant workers in total in Japan.   However, only very few people have applied for workers’ compensation.  It would be great if there was a so-called "life-line" or help-line for nuclear workers.

2  Working conditions such as safety education and radiation control should be made as visible as possible to the third party.  Without adequate safety training, endless disputes will occur between workers and sub-contractors about whether safety education have been properly conducted or not - as was the case in my experience.  We need to avoid such situations.

3  Myocardial infarction should be included in the symptoms subject to the nuclear workers’ compensation.  Myocardial infarction is included in the registered diseases of A-bomb victims, but not those of nuclear workers.  The radiation health problems caused by the A-bomb and nuclear power plant are basically the same.  It is also very important to evaluate the effects of internal exposure correctly.

Lastly, let me report to you regarding my own application for workers’ compensation.  On November 2, I received a rejection letter to my re-examination request from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare.  I
had repeatedly requested a site examination at Tsuruga nuclear reactor, but the decision was made without an inspection.  I strongly protest this.

Tsuruga nuclear reactor 1, where I used to work is the same type of reactor as those at Fukushima.  It had many problems such as shabby pipes.  Even without a tsunami, if there is any major earthquake, an accident like Fukushima could occur at any moment.  Why didn’t they examine Tsuruga No. 1 reactor?  I would like to have a proper explanation from the government. Thank you very much.

Speech by a Mother in Fukushima

Sachiko Sato, Representative, Fukushima Network for Saving Children from Radiation

For the past 30 years, I have been practicing natural style of farming while rearing my 5 children. After Chernobyl accident, I changed my life style using old day practices and wisdom handed down from generation to generation so that we could survive without oil, nuclear power, and imported foods. People who wanted to learn such kind of living gathered around me from all over Japan, so we were living in a sort of small community.

Then, the Fukushima accident took away everything from us. This year, we cannot grow safe organic vegetables from our agricultural land which was taken great care of without any chemical. As a farmer, there is nothing that can make me more sad.

After March 11, lives of all the people in Fukushima was changed. We had to manage to survive in the midst of the triple disasters-earthquake, Tsunami, and nuclear accident.

Particularly, we suffered from nuclear disaster. Since the radiation is invisible, it is very difficult for us to accept the fact. The radiation that exists for sure in the beautiful scenery that has not changed a bit from last year put a tremendous gap between people who decided not to continue living that area and people who decided to continue living that area.

The families and neighbors who are supposed to share their sufferings cannot share their feelings.Fukushima peoples mental damage caused by this disintegration of peoples minds can be called asimmediate health effects. (After the accident, the government of Japan repeatedly said, There will be no immediate health damage.)

The government does not take any action for the upcoming health damage caused by low level radiation saying that the probability of health damage is low enough. On the contrary, the government is trying to use 2 million Fukushima people as guinea pigs to collect data, saying that there is not enough data for radiation exposure below 100 milisieverts.

To my eyes, the scenery of radiation contaminated Fukushima is just like a battle field, even though I cannot see the radiation itself. It is a battlefield between people who foolishly behaved as if they could conquer the nature and people who have cherished the nature. Since Fukushima is beautiful in nature, it does not look different at all. In sight, it is a beautiful battle field.

But it is a battlefield to take away the future of children by the state power. There should not be any children in the battlefield. We should not leave any child in a battlefield with fire.

We cannot save our children with the economy first ideology. We immediately need to take every measure to rescue children now.

People in Japan and in the world should have felt the horror of nuclear accident. What kind of nerve does this country have not only continuing nuclear power generation domestically but also trying to export more nuclear power to overseas?

I wonder what the government is thinking in regard to the health effects that can continue for generations to come. In any case, we cannot expect much from the government who left children in the fires of battlefields as long as 8 months.

Now we know that it is not our government who can protect our children. With this trend continuing, we the adults in the 21st century will have to be told that we made the judgment with our priority on the short-sighted economy rather than childrens lives in the future. We will be told like this until human race would eventually be extinguished.

It is people who can save childrens lives. Each single person needs to open his or her eyes of mind and make a judgment to see what is correct and what should be done to save lives.

Mothers and fathers in Fukushima stood up to make a single wish come true. That is to save lives of children. People from all over the nation got connected to protect lives of children in Fukushima. Now the time has come for everybody to get connected and make actions and to alter their life styles, the moment for all of us to make a very important decision.

If the nuclear power does not stop even after this Fukushima accident, humankind would surely tread the path to destruction. The horror of nuclear accident coming from Fukushima should be disseminated to the people all over the world. We need to continue our actions until all the nuclear power plants in the world are stopped. We should never cause any more sorrow Fukushima children had to any other children on our planet. Thank you very much.
